Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

Last December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
