Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
